For the Week of July 7, 2025

🎙️July 7, 2025 Weekly Actions Audio – available for when you’re on the go

🔷 The City of Kirkland is seeking applicants to fill a vacancy on the Planning Commission. Deadline, July 11. Go to Kirkland Government Boards and Commissions to learn more and apply.

🔷 Let Your Voice Be Heard! The WA State Dems Advocacy Committee developed a survey to gather data from Democrats across the state on what the most important legislative priorities are for the 2026 session. We are asking that all WA Democrats take this survey, so that we can advocate for your communities in the legislature. You have until July 13 at 11:50pm to take the 2026 Legislative Priorities Survey. We hope to get as many Washington Democrats to take it as we can. Please share it with your Democrat friends and neighbors!

🔷 Like Waze, “but for ICE sightings.” That’s how the creators of a new app that allows users to report Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity are describing the application. The app is called ICEBlock and allows users to report ICE activity on their phones with just a couple of taps.

Here are your 2 Actions and Bright Spots.

✊ Action 1 – Be Part of the 3.5% and Take Action!

from Shannon Watts on Finding the Fire to Fight

Now that “No Kings” protests are over, how do we keep the energy and motivation to protest?  Per research by Harvard political scientist Erica Chenoweth, it just takes 3.5% of the population engaging in sustained, non-violent resistance and when this happens, change will follow. We don’t need everyone in the US—we need just 3.5% which is about 8 million people. There are a range of ongoing, weekly protests across the Eastside that could use more volunteers. If you are unable to make it to a protest, there are a number of different actions you can take to stay involved in the movement. Indivisible Eastside keeps an updated link of local protests. Two new upcoming events include protesting Electrify Expo and Good Trouble.

Action 1a: Electrify Expo Drop Tesla! Electrify Expo claims to celebrate the future of clean transportation, but by giving Tesla a huge platform they’re legitimizing a company that is actively undermining that future. Tesla isn’t just a car brand; it’s the financial engine of Elon Musk, who is using his wealth and influence to fund far-right extremism, attack public safety regulations, break apart critical government services, and spread disinformation. Join this protest on July 12 to call on Electrify Expo to uninvite Tesla and discourage attendees from buying a Tesla.

Action 1b: On Thursday July 17th, the 5th Anniversary of the Civil Rights leader Rep. John Lewis’ passing, in alignment with Good Trouble Lives On, Indivisible Eastside is hosting a multi-location visibility event from 4:30-5:30 pm on highway overpasses on the Eastside. Please join us! See all the details and sign up for a location of your choice.

✊ Action 2 – DO NOT Sign Petitions from Safe Eastside

    from The Urbanist

Safe Eastside, a group with a long track record of attacking facilities for people exiting homelessness, is turning its attention to an attempt to repeal major pieces of state housing reform approved in 2025. The two targeted laws (House Bill 1491 for parking reform, and Senate Bill 5184 supporting transit-oriented development) were a part of a broad slate of housing reforms passed in 2025, which lawmakers have dubbed as the “Year of Housing 2.0.” Safe Eastside has until July 26 to collect more than 150,000 signatures to get a repeal referendum on the ballot this November.

Both policies, intended to make a dent in the state’s acute housing affordability crisis, were top priorities for Democrats in the 2025 legislature. They featured prominently in Governor Bob Ferguson’s transition report on housing, which claimed that “no single housing policy” would be as effective for allowing housing construction as a transit-oriented development bill.

Safe Eastside has not yet publicized any signature-gathering events or provided an update on progress. Awareness and education are key given that many residents may not know about this group and their motivations. Spread the word and urge your neighbors, friends, and family NOT to sign any petitions from Safe Eastside. Given that Safe Eastside appears to be in the beginning stages of gathering signatures, this is the time for us to use whatever platforms we can to ensure that Safe Eastside cannot gather enough signatures to get their referenda on this November’s general election ballot.
