🔷 The Washington State Supreme Court has major elections this year. Five of the nine Justice positions on the State Supreme Court will be on the ballot. Several of the races will feature in the August primary, so it is time to learn about these candidates. In late April there was a candidate forum held in Yakima that will be helpful to try to distinguish between the candidates. Nine of twelve announced candidates participated. Please take some time to watch and learn about them.
🔷 The Circle organization in Issaquah does amazing work supporting their local community in many different ways, filling needs that would otherwise go unmet for thousands of people. This year they plan to provide summer activities for local children, including camping, kayaking, rock climbing, art, and music. However, due to federal cuts to funding of some local programs, they are looking for help to expand the number of children they can provide activities for. Ideally they are looking for sponsorship to cover costs at $250 per child but any donations to help cover the program would be welcome. If you are able to help please donate HERE.
🔷 Our team that looks at cybersecurity-related issues has some concerns about some recent developments that deserve your attention today:
- A bug in MS Edge may allow passwords saved in the browser to be read by any other software running on your computer, including malicious software. This article reviews password managers you can use to store passwords (instead of the browser); you should choose one and move to it for password storage away from all browsers, not just Microsoft Edge: https://www.pcmag.com/picks/the-best-password-managers
- On May 8, Meta (the owners of Facebook & Instagram) removed privacy from Instagram DMs. If you need privacy for your conversations (you do), use an encrypted method of communication, like Signal (https://signal.org/).
Weekly Actions
✊ Action 1 – Fight the GOP bill that would give billions to ICE & Trump’s ballroom
From Indivisible National
Last week, Republicans released the initial text of their reconciliation funding bill. In addition to the $70 billion they want to shovel into the regime’s mass deportation machine, they also snuck in $1 billion for Trump’s White House ballroom.
At a time when so many Americans are struggling to get by, Republicans want us to believe there’s no money for healthcare, housing, or food assistance. But they’re prepared to spend billions of dollars on concentration camps, bonuses for Border Patrol and ICE thugs, and a golden ballroom where Trump can host his billionaire friends.
Republicans know their agenda is massively unpopular, but they’re hoping they can pass this bill quickly before the public even hears about it. So, we need to move faster, be louder, and build a backlash big enough to stop this bill in its tracks.
Even with supportive Members of Congress who are likely to oppose this bill, there are steps we can take to add strength to their opposition.
✊ Action 1a – Contact your Members of Congress and tell them to mount a fierce campaign against this bill in the media and online to block this bill.

Hello. My name is [NAME] and I am a constituent from [CITY]. I am contacting you to urge you to use every tool at your disposal to fight any budget reconciliation bill that sends more taxpayer dollars to ICE and Border Patrol. Republicans already voted to give ICE and CBP a massive budget last year, and now they’re trying to use the reconciliation process to give these agencies billions more, as well as showering public funds on the disastrous ballroom that Trump claimed would be privately funded.
I urge you to vote NO on the reconciliation legislation and use all available leverage to delay, obstruct, and build public opposition to Republicans’ backwards spending priorities. Hardworking families should not have to suffer to fuel Trump’s mass deportation machine.
Thank you.

✊ Action 2 – Stand up for the right to protest in Bellevue
We learned recently of a proposed ordinance in Bellevue related to protests that will be discussed at the city council meeting on Tuesday (5/12). The meeting starts at 6 pm in the city council chambers. The ordinance addresses protests targeted at an individual or residence, but it’s written in a way that is incredibly broad and could be used to criminalize any protest in any residential area. The agenda item summary seems relatively innocuous, but the actual text of the ordinance is incredibly broad and vague. It defines a protest as:
“any protest, demonstration or picketing activity, including but not limited to, marching, congregating, standing, posting, parading, demonstrating, picketing, or patrolling of persons, with or without signs, and with or without making audible or amplified noise.”
As written, the ordinance effectively allows powerful individuals to criminalize any activity in their neighborhood that they want to stop. Only authoritarians criminalize free speech. Peaceful protest is the foundation of our democracy.
Please show up in support of the right to peacefully protest in Bellevue. It is not necessary to be a resident of Bellevue to attend. Protests happen across city boundaries and this would affect anyone who wishes to exercise their 1st Amendment rights within the city.
Date and time – Tues May 12, 6 pm
Location – Bellevue City Hall – 450 110th Ave NE, Bellevue
⛅ Bright Spots
- WA Supreme Court ruled against the first challenge to ‘millionaires tax’. The Court ruled that voters cannot bring a referendum against the newly passed “millionaires tax.” The court upheld the constitutionality of a clause in the text of the law that blocks a challenge by referendum. The millionaire backers of the opposition to the tax have now launched an effort to repeal it via initiative, probably this November, despite their ally Tim Eyman stating that this was a bad idea as polling is very much in support of the tax.
- A Federal court ruled against the new global tariffs that Trump imposed after February’s loss at the Supreme Court. In the ruling, the tariffs were described as “invalid″ and ”unauthorized by law.”
- Immigrant organizers flipped Nixon’s home town to Democrats, spurred by ICE raids and unfair election rules that had kept Latinos out of city government.
- Democrats held onto a narrow majority in the Michigan Senate by winning a special election in a closely divided district.
