For the Week of September 8, 2025

🎙️Sep 8, 2025 Weekly Actions Audio – available for when you’re on the go

🔷 Indivisible Eastside’s general meeting is on Sat Sept 13, 3-4:30 pm. New member welcome starts at 2:30, then at 3 pm we will feature a presentation about what local police can and cannot do with regard to the federal regime’s immigration crackdown and abductions, and ways you can help our local immigrant community. We have asked them to cover what the Kirkland Police Dept. (KPD) can and cannot do with regard to federal agents, when calling 911 would be appropriate, and what the department’s position would be with regard to community members witnessing and documenting abductions in progress. If you have other questions around this topic that you would like KPD to answer, please email hello@indivisibleeastside.com. Please register to attend using the access code ‘indivisible.’ Full Agenda in the link.

🔷 On Sept 4th, Trump hosted a group of U.S. Tech execs including Zuckerberg, Gates, Tim Cook, and Sam Altman – all of whom showered him with words of admiration and gratitude. In the same week we learned that Susan Collins (R-Maine) cast a crucial vote which advanced the Big Ugly Bill, one day after a private equity billionaire kicked in $2 million to her re-election efforts. In the CA redistricting fight, Charlie Munger Jr., a champion of independent redistricting, donated $10 million to oppose the effort. On days when money seems to win, I think of Bernie Sanders, “I’m no mathematician, but I do know this: 99% is a hell of a lot bigger than 1%.” Be part of the active, loud, courageous, 99%. You are needed.

Here are your 2 Actions and Bright Spots.

✊ Action 1 – Support Prop 50, the Election Rigging Response Act (ERRA)

California’s Prop 50, the Election Rigging Response Act (ERRA), is a plan to offset gains from Texas’s gerrymander. California, like WA state, is one of eight states with an independent commission who draws the district maps for elections. When Texas stepped up to Trump’s call to “find five more seats,” Governor Newsom decided it was time to, in his words, “Fight fire with fire.” Prop 50 will expire in 2030, when the next census-based redistricting would happen normally, and will return the state to the independent oversight that Californians voted in originally.

What are other red states doing? Ohio has begun the process to redraw their maps with an initial deadline of Sept. 30. The White House has been pushing for Indiana state lawmakers to redraw their House map, but they are not committed. Missouri Gov. Kehoe called a special session to consider redrawing the state’s House map. It is important to note that the Missouri GOP ultimately nixed a plan in 2022 to draw a 7-1 map over concerns it could endanger some Republicans. Florida is starting to take steps to withdraw their maps as well. The bottom line: Republicans have more opportunities across the map to gerrymander House districts than Democrats.

Illinois, Maryland and New York are considering redistricting, but no decisions have been made. Maryland’s delegation already includes seven Democrats and one Republican, and their last attempt to redraw their maps was struck down. So, California’s potential for five seats is very important.

California’s plan is not a ‘slam dunk.’ Californians received their first piece of “Vote No” mail about Prop 50 within 24 hours of its existence, and are receiving more almost daily. California has a full ERRA action guide. Links to actions you can take to help the effort are below.

    Actions to support California’s efforts

    1. Make calls to voters – Seattle Indivisible has organized an effort to phonebank 6 days per week, 2 shifts per day. As of February 2025, 22.9 million of California’s 26.9 million eligible adults (85%) were registered to vote.
    2. Donate if your budget allows.
    3. Be a part of a texting team. Join a group of dedicated volunteers who connect directly with voters through personal and impactful conversations by text.
    4. Join the social media team.
    5. Participate in postcard campaigns to potential voters. Postcards must be mailed by Oct. 18th.

✊ Action 2 – Leave Healthcare Decisions to the Professionals, not to AI

    Source: Indivisible National

Background: Medicare has historically covered more procedures, with fewer hoops to jump through, than for-profit insurance companies. Whereas private insurers callously limit care and require “prior authorization” before covering many services or procedures, traditional Medicare offers broad coverage that’s comparatively transparent and simple.

AI Authorization/Denials come to Washington State: The Trump regime wants to introduce prior authorization – one of the most hated aspects of private insurance – to Medicare, and they’re outsourcing those life-changing authorization decisions to unproven AI companies. It gets even worse: AI developers will be paid based on the value of requested services or procedures they reject – meaning AI companies would directly profit from denying needed care to seniors.

This will roll out in January 2026, in six pilot states: Arizona, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, and Washington. The pilots will reportedly be limited to about 17 procedures to start, but if they achieve their goal – cutting costs by denying a lot of people a lot of care – they could expand to more procedures and more states.

Please contact our Senators either by phone or email asking them to advocate for our rights. NOTE: Cantwell was one of the Senators who questioned RFK and bluntly called him a charlatan. Please consider thanking her for her work in the healthcare arena.

Hello, I’m [NAME], one of your constituents from [CITY], and I’m extremely concerned to hear that President Trump and Dr. Oz are letting greedy and unproven AI companies come between Medicare patients and their doctors.

My coverage, the coverage of my parents and grandparents, and our healthcare decisions should be between the patient and doctor – not AI companies who profit from denying me or my loved ones care.

I’m writing to demand that you speak out LOUDLY against Trump and Oz’s plans to let AI choose who can and can’t get healthcare! Then, use the upcoming federal funding negotiations to restore the vital funds Medicare, Medicaid, and our hospitals need.

Thank you for standing up for healthcare for your constituents.

Candidate Corner: Retain Vandana Slatter for State Senate LD 48

    From IE member Wendy Gao

    Vandana Slatter’s website

Senator Slatter was unanimously appointed to the State Senate seat in 2025 after Sen. Patty Kuderer was elected as insurance commissioner. She represents the 48th Legislative District, which includes parts of Bellevue, Redmond, and Kirkland, and all of Clyde Hill, Medina, Yarrow Point, and Hunts Point. A Bellevue resident, she served on the Bellevue City Council, and then as State House Representative in 2017.

As a licensed pharmacist, she worked for twenty years as a clinical scientist at multiple leading biotech companies. In 2007, she was appointed by Gov. Christine Gregoire to a four-year term on the Washington State Board of Pharmacy.

One of the few legislators with a health and science background, she founded and co-chairs the Science, Tech and Innovation Caucus. She also serves as vice chair of the Environment, Energy & Technology Committee and is a member of Higher Ed and Workforce Development committee.

Senator Slatter has taken some hard votes during the 2025 session, and has had working families on her mind with each vote, such as to limit rent increases, and protecting funding for education.

Vandana’s Endorsements include (see link for full list):

    ⛅ Bright Spots

    • On Labor Day, more than 1,000 “Workers Over Billionaires” protests were held across the U.S. Events large and small were held in the Puget Sound area, including ones in Seattle and Bothell.
    • Judge Halts Use of Troops in LA: A federal district court ruled this week that the deployment of federal forces in Los Angeles violates the Posse Comitatus Act, a long-standing law that bars the military from civilian law enforcement unless specifically authorized by Congress. The judge’s order prohibits military involvement in actions such as arrests, searches, and crowd control.
    • An appeals court blocked Trump’s use of the Alien Enemies Act to deport Venezuelans. A three-judge panel of the conservative 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals agreed with lower courts who argued that the wartime powers in the 18th century Act were never intended to be used against people the administration claims are gang members.
    • The governors of California, Oregon, Washington and Hawaii formed the West Coast Health Alliance to provide vaccine recommendations to their residents apart from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The WA Dept of Health issued a standing order for Covid vaccinations without prescriptions. Here is the FAQ that can be printed and taken to pharmacies if needed. Send Governor Ferguson Thanks!
    • Ahead of the Kennedy Senate hearing, a poll shared with GOP members showed a majority of Trump voters support vaccines. Conducted by veteran Republican pollsters, results show Trump voters believe vaccines save lives and “that there is broad unity across party lines supporting vaccines such as measles (MMR), shingles, tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (TDAP), and Hepatitis B.”
    • Good News/Bad News: Unemployment UP. Job Growth DOWN. Even Fox News is admitting, “..this is bad.”
    • Did you know the Democrat’s have a rapid response account, @FactPostNews?
