🔷 The Supreme Court handed down six rulings before summer recess. The most watched was whether federal courts have authority to issue national injunctions. Presidents Obama, Biden and Trump have all railed against having their agenda thwarted by national injunctions. Since January, federal judges have issued at least 25 national injunctions. The ruling, “Universal injunctions likely exceed the equitable authority that Congress has given to federal courts.” Most reporting regarding this ruling references the Administration’s desire to end birthright citizenship. While the ruling does not address this, it stayed the nationwide injunctions issued by federal judges in Maryland, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. However, the opinion also said Trump’s birthright citizenship order can’t take effect for 30 days from Friday’s opinion, giving more time for legal challenges.

One of the Court’s last decisions was banning gender affirming care for minors. The US Suicide and Crisis Lifeline can still be reached by calling or texting 988, but specialized services for LGBTQ+ youth end July 17th. Other resources exist: The Campaign for Southern Equality supports trans youth nationwide. Point of Pride is accepting donations to make gender affirming care more accessible. The Trevor Project has a counselor hotline. Trans Lifeline connects trans people to community support and resources needed to survive and thrive.

🔷 Do you have more money than time? Consider helping with postage costs for volunteers writing Get Out the Vote and other types of postcards. Up until recently, the generous organizers of Postcards for Democracy – Wendy, Susan and Lori – have been paying out of pocket so that writers can focus on the writing. But with the huge popularity, and the increase in stamp prices, they need your help. You can learn more and donate to their go-fund-me HERE.

🔷 In a recent Immigration Update webinar by the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project (NWIRP) some good resources were shared help those threatened by the administration’s attacks on the immigrant community. One of the most useful is the guide for anyone who may observe immigration enforcement activity. HERE is a link to the Bystander and Observer Guidelines (produced by WAISN), which contains important legal information that we should all be aware of. Please review, save and share it. A link to the recording and slides from the webinar is HERE.

Please consider donating to NWIRP and WAISN if you are able.

Here are your 2 Actions and Bright Spots.

✊ Action 1 – Blue State Defiance – Safeguarding Civil Liberties

    from Blue State Defiance

Over the last six months, we’ve witnessed an alarming rise in disappearances, surveillance, and secretive operations targeting immigrants, international students, researchers, leaders of organizations, protestors, and even elected officials—often under the guise of federal law enforcement.

In many cases, those targeted have not been accused of a crime, only of participating in protests, speaking out about U.S. foreign policy, or simply being present at immigrant-heavy protests and institutions like universities. Washington is a blue state, and we can do more to protect our neighbors from ICE. One of the most frightening things is that ICE agents are frequently masked, show no ID, and often aren’t in uniforms. California introduced legislation SB 627 – the No Secret Police Act which makes wearing a mask or disguise a misdemeanor. Let’s reach out to the Governor, and our legislators asking them to:

    • Ban the use of masks and anonymized uniforms for all state, local, and federal law enforcement operating within your state during public enforcement.
    • Require visible identification and agency affiliation during any public interaction or arrest.

Subject: Governor Ferguson Must Take Action Against Secret Police Tactics & Immigration Abuses

    Dear Governor Ferguson,

I’m writing as a concerned resident of [State] alarmed by the rise in masked, unidentified law enforcement officers operating in our communities, often in coordination with ICE and DHS. These tactics, reminiscent of past authoritarian regimes, are being used to disappear students/researchers, intimidate immigrants, and silence dissent.

You have the executive power to respond. I urge you to:

    • Publicly support legislation like California’s No Secret Police Act, banning masked law enforcement during public operations.
    • Issue an executive order requiring all state and local law enforcement to display visible identification during enforcement actions and to refuse collaboration with federal agencies engaging in secretive immigration raids.
    • Use your platform to condemn politically motivated ICE activity and stand with immigrant and international communities under threat.

This is about protecting civil liberties and stopping authoritarian overreach in our own state. I hope you’ll act decisively.

    Sincerely,

    [Your Name]

Bonus action: If you’re able, donate to Washington groups supporting detainees and their families.

    ✊ Action 2 – Say ‘no’ to T-Mobile and Musk’s Starlink

    from The Action Network

T-Mobile US, Inc. headquartered in Bellevue, pledges to be “an even greater force for good,” proudly backing programs and initiatives supporting environmental sustainability, community empowerment, and digital equity. However, when T-Mobile launches its “T-Satellite” program this July, Musk stands to gain billions. Mr. Musk has helped drive assaults on environmental protection, equity practices, the social safety net, workers’ rights, LGBTQ+ rights, the rule of law and even the basic constitutional order. Musk’s actions are not in line with the stated values and ethics of T-Mobile and tens of millions of its customers.

Email Subject: Stop Funding Musk’s attacks on democracy.

T-Mobile pledges to be “an even greater force for good,” proudly backing programs and initiatives supporting environmental sustainability, community empowerment, and digital equity.

However, Elon Musk’s actions are fundamentally misaligned with the stated values and ethics of T-Mobile and tens of millions of its customers. For example, he:

    • Spent almost $500 million to elect Donald Trump, and Trump’s allies routinely spread racist, homophobic, transphobic and anti-immigrant sentiment and misinformation
    • Led assaults on our federal government which resulted in the firing of tens of thousands of federal workers
    • Pressured lawmakers to strip healthcare and food assistance from millions of Americans
    • Bragged about putting USAID through the woodchipper; professional academics have stated that the Musk-led decapitation of USAID has resulted in the deaths of approximately 200,000 children by the end of May 2025.

I urge T-Mobile to end its contracts with Starlink which helps fund Elon Musk’s attacks on democracy.

    ⛅ Bright Spots

    • The American Bar Association (ABA) dropped a massive federal lawsuit against the White House. The complaint names the Office of the President, but for good measure, also names each and every high level government department along with every cabinet official.
    • In a unanimous decision, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit ruled that a Louisiana law requiring public schools to permanently display a government-approved, Protestant version of the Ten Commandments in every classroom is unconstitutional.
    • The Affordable Care Act (ACA) mandates that most private health insurance plans cover a wide range of preventive services, including screenings, at no cost to the patient. On Friday, the Supreme Court upheld this part of the ACA.
    • The Senate Parliamentarian said the $1,000 fee for asylum seekers would be subject to 60 vote threshold. The $5,000 fee for sponsors was also outside the Byrd rule.
